BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Students work on an engine with Professor Jim O'Brien.

Design machines and mechanical systems to tackle real-life challenges with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Students in 草榴社区鈥檚 undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering use principles of physics, mathematics and materials science to understand how things work. Through hands-on learning, lab-based research and collaborative projects, our program equips students to solve problems, improve efficiencies and develop innovative technologies.

What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines, covering everything from engines, vehicles and manufacturing equipment to heating and cooling systems, energy systems and batteries, medical devices and robotics. Whether by creating a more fuel-efficient car or designing a lifesaving medical device, mechanical engineers play a key role in shaping the way we live and work.

Why become a 草榴社区 Mechanical Engineer?

Mechanical Engineering students at 草榴社区 are part of a close-knit, supportive community that extends from the classroom to the wider world. Faculty are deeply committed to undergraduate success and take the time to know each student personally. Beyond campus, 草榴社区 Engineers engage in service-learning trips, STEM outreach and study abroad experiences that connect their skills to global impact. And through the Nova Nation, alumni are always ready to mentor, guide and support students during their time at 草榴社区 and beyond.

Areas of Study

All students in 草榴社区鈥檚 Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering program learn the foundational science in each of the following areas:

  • Dynamics and Controls (artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, robotics, aircraft and mechatronics, etc.)
  • Mechanics and Materials (structures, machinery, advanced manufacturing, classical/micro/nano/bio mechanics, energy storage materials and batteries, classical/micro/nano/bio materials, biomimetics, etc.)
  • Thermal Fluids Systems (solar power, energy, fluid systems, fuel cells, etc.)

Students in their junior year can choose one of these three areas as an official concentration that will appear on their transcript.

Additionally, all seniors complete a two-semester capstone design project鈥攎any with industry or government sponsors or tied to international service initiatives鈥攇iving them real-world experience before graduation.

Related minors鈥攊ncluding Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechatronics and Humanitarian Engineering鈥攐ffer an opportunity for more in-depth study.

Students may also be able to obtain a Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering  in five years.
